How to get back to your habits after quitting

April 20, 2026 · 5 min read

You did it for three weeks and then life happened: you got sick, traveled, fell out of routine. And you've gone two months without restarting because every day that passes weighs more. Relax. Quitting isn't the failure; staying quit is. What separates consistent people from the rest isn't that they never fall: it's that they get back fast.

1. Drop the guilt: you're not starting from zero

The most expensive mental mistake is thinking “I've lost all my progress”. Not true. Your body and brain remember the habit; restarting is far faster than the first time. You're not starting from zero, you're returning to a path you already know.

2. Come back smaller than you think

Don't try to restart at the level where you left off; that's the trap. If you trained an hour, come back with 15 minutes. The goal of the comeback isn't performance, it's rebuilding the identity that you follow through. Intensity comes back on its own later.

3. The “never two in a row” rule

Missing one day is human; missing two in a row is how quitting starts. Allow yourself to slip, but commit to never missing twice in a row. That single rule sustains more habits than all the motivation in the world.

4. Schedule the comeback for TODAY, not “Monday”

“I'll start Monday” is the phrase that's kept you stuck for two months. The best day to come back is today, even with the smallest step. Tomorrow is where good intentions go to die.

What helps most to come back and not fall again? Having something remind you and hold you accountable from day one. Cero Excusas reactivates your reminders, asks if you followed through and, if you waver again, insists. Falling is part of the process; staying down is optional.
