How to study for an exam without procrastinating

June 18, 2026 · 4 min read

The exam is in five days and you know it, but you opened the notebook, felt the weight of everything left to do, and closed the notebook. Better tomorrow. The problem with procrastinating isn't that you're lazy: it's that studying for an exam looks like one giant, indivisible mountain, and your brain runs from anything it can't see how to start. Let's break that mountain into steps you can actually take today.

1. Split the material before you touch it

Before studying anything, spend 15 minutes listing everything the exam covers and spreading it across days. Don't study "on Monday": study "topics 1 and 2 on Monday." Once the plan exists, your only daily decision is to execute, not to figure out what to do.

A concrete goal per day beats the anxiety of "I have to study everything."

2. The 5-minute rule

The most powerful trick against procrastination is to cheat the start. Commit to studying for just 5 minutes. That's it. If after 5 minutes you want to stop, you stop.

The magic is that you almost never stop. Starting was the hard part, not continuing. Sitting down and opening the material breaks the inertia, and once you're moving, the brain prefers to keep going. Always begin with the easiest task of the day to warm up.

3. Study with questions, not summaries

Making pretty summaries is procrastination disguised as productivity: you spend hours decorating notes without learning. Instead, turn each topic into exam questions and answer them from memory.

  • Find past exams or exercises from previous years.
  • Cover the answers and solve them as if it were the real day.
  • Mark what you got wrong and aim your next block there.

Studying by solving shows you exactly what you don't know, instead of giving you a false sense of mastery.

4. Decide where and when, not just what

"I'll study later" is the phrase that kills every plan. "Later" never arrives. Decide the exact time and place: today at 4 p.m., at the library, topic 3. Once the moment is scheduled, you don't have to negotiate with yourself over and over about whether it's time.

5. Crack down on "just a sec" on your phone

Procrastination almost always wears the same face: the phone. Before you start, leave it far away in another room. If you use it to rest between blocks, set an alarm, because that "5-minute" break turns into an hour without you noticing. A planned break helps; an improvised break on your phone swallows your whole afternoon.

Procrastination isn't cured with guilt, it's cured by starting before you feel like it. If your problem is that nobody holds you to getting going, that's where Cero Excusas comes in: it reminds you on WhatsApp about the block you planned, asks if you really studied, and if you ignore it, it calls you. Because the exam won't wait, and sometimes the only missing piece is someone who won't let you push it to tomorrow.
